The capital of the island is Argostoli, which counts a third of the inhabitants of the island (approximately 13.000 inhabitants). When you arrive in the city you can park your car to walk on the stone bridge that crosses the lagoon, called the "De Bosset" bridge. In the port in the morning, fishermen sell their fish on board their boats. Several loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) that live permanently in the harbor prowl in the hope that a fish falls from a boat. Fishermen do not fail to attract them by sometimes throwing a small fish. The main shopping areas of Argostoli are concentrated on the first two parallel streets from the sea and the small perpendicular streets that cross them. An archaeological museum closed since a major earthquake in 2014 which weakened the building brings together all the archaeological finds made on the island. There are plans to reconstruct the building. Do not forget to go for a stroll at the northern point to discover the small lighthouse built in the 19th century which has Doric style columns. A small town where it is good to stroll on summer evenings when the town wakes up to take advantage of the coolness of the night. The central square becomes very lively, the terraces of the bars and restaurants fill up while the children play under the supervision of the parents. | ||||||
